Realistically I'll lose interest after I start one project and move down the list as I see fit. Or jump to an idea not listed below. Also I'm not interested in fluffing up the list after I get however many written down just so I can have fifty.
Instead we'll play one of my favorite games; 'Make a List! Then Change it Periodically to Make it Look Like you Accomplished Things!' It's one you can't lose and everyone is a winner. Winter came late in Chicago, but it came with a party hat on. One with earflaps and a wooly lining.
I've got my woolens all sorted out for Xmas, mine is going to be an orphan one as well. I just hope I can finish the list beforehand. Little bits and pieces are done and it's not yet December. Once I get my motivation back it should be easy as pie. I just need a bit of a nap first.

Runway Cat

Sometimes I feel like I'm only holding him back. People walking to and fro, wearing summery clothes and chanting things like 'What good weather we're having' and 'Funny, I don't even need my coat'.
It was chaos.
The week before my annual B.Y.O. Pumpkin Carving party we set out for our gourdy favorites, it was an unseasonable 80 degrees. I rolled up my pant legs, threw ice cubes in my coffee, and avoided the smokey kettle corn tent to hunt for a warty pumpkin to call my own. We weren't disappointed by the selection at Goebberts of cardboard cutouts to pose with nor the seed filled orbs piled around the acreage.

We bought the farm. Or damn well close to it. If my arms are any gauge for it, the haul must have been close to thirty pounds. Navigating the dodgy cart through the expansive parking lot was a feat and this man was not going to allow any blood spilt. The apple cider made it to the car and was partially consumed on the ride home in autumnal spirit.

Normally I'm an albino pumpkin carver, but I saw this lonely medium sized 'kin in a bin of neglected odd bits I brought it home thinking I'd be able to make a wicked witch. My inexperience with this sort of gourd and tool set made with a five year old in mind was unable to complete the task I had set for it. When I was that age I'm sure I would have fun a way to poke an eye out with the generic set of tools only meant for bending and breaking.

That Star Trek logo is his mouth, completely unintentional. There were cupcakes and laughs and poorly-executed pool games and whiskey shots. Some of the people who mean the most in my life stopped by, including the tamale guy.

From dianadorable

A lovely birthday present from artist boy wonder, Andrew Malvenda. Now I have a business card to be proud of, Chewbacca would agree. Funny story behind this; ABW sneakily asked me many, many seemingly unrelated questions over a period of weeks then presented me with this. Only one answer he ignored, when asking for my dream client I responded James Joyce. He obviously went a different route, wookie style.

From dianadorable

I spent a lovely Sunday afternoon in the suburbs with family. I didn't notice till I after I posted that she had brought along a water bottle full of red wine for the outing. It's a neighborhood on the Northside of Chicago, nestled between Lincoln Square and Logan Square. There's a lot of personality, furthered by the bevy of small business owners, two of which I do work for.
Grizzly's Lounge was owned by one of these such people; sold odd meats like alligator before closing at some point about two years ago. Several times a week I've walked by this abandoned restaurant with an equal amount of regret and wonder. The entire outside of this corner spot has queer murals outside that I assume only excited the patrons who visited.

From dianadorable

Look at these amazing bears, both terrifying and completely out of place in the urban atmos. This clever woman raided Grizzly's and when I went to visit her I found this gem. For under $100 and about twenty minutes of chat I brought it home. The frame is oak, the chalkboard double-sided, and the last specials still written upon it. It's no less then forty pounds, the three block walk home and four flights of stairs tested my triceps.

From dianadorable

I feel like I've got a little piece of my neighborhood to always carry with me, although it causes sore arms when brought about. A mix of art and nostalgia, currently propped up against my wall until I find a home with walls strong enough to hold it. Furry Monster added for reference size. We were maybe in two classes together before I interjected myself into his life and made him stop dying his hair black. (Seriously, Timmo) For the last couple years he has been fartin' around in South Korea, teaching English to kids and; for the most part, staying out of trouble.

Last summer I had the chance to spend time with him when he finished his first tour, then Tim hid in a hole in Milwaukee till he abruptly left again. Despite all this, we've managed more email contact then ever and my bestie even sent me a package that I received yesterday.

I believe it speaks for itself, but was prefaced by this in an email: "I've been talking about it for two years but on Saturday I finally did send you something in the mail. Mostly because no one reads you. And my life looks like this 90% of the time. Let's be honest here.

From dianadorable

Sometimes I make little things when I can find the time and have the need to. This one has been caught in my rendition of "Lavalette" using the vibrant Misti Alpaca Hand Paint Sock in 'Reggaeton'. Although I find the color name to be an absolutely terrible description, it has inspired a fair bit of Clash songs to knit to. It's got a bit of an island, 'hey mon' vibe to it yet not the funky urbanness that's implied in the name. I'm fairly sure the person who dutifully named it may be actually colorless or, to be less racist and offensive, colorblind. Completely understandable considering the larger the kerchief gets, the shorter amounts of time I can watch it grow without spots happening before my eyes.

From dianadorable

Meanwhile, Color is not lacking in this house. And I'm not just talking about the daily application of Jergen's Natural Glow on my ultraviolet bits. I managed to sew a rather girlish, full skirt in a bright Kaffe Fasset cabbage rose print over this last weekend. The enormous flowers in yellows and purples inspired a bit of retail therapy from Zappos, in the form of purple patent pointy flats. I like my little glimpse of toe cleavage as well as the perforated leather that shows my pink nail polish. A lady reveals a little something, something.

From dianadorable

From dianadorable

If you haven't been blinded by my ankles, then let me promise the Birds n' the Bees n' Butterflies Baby quilt will be started this weekend. There was more thought put into the adorableness of the theme then the actual designing element. I have yet to really figure out how to go about it, Googling 'Best quilt tutorial to showcase fabric' came up with links remarkably slim in relevance. Including the second link provided by Amazon for "24 Applique Quilts for Dog Lovers." I'm going to wing it and expect the little bugger to spit up on the white parts only. It's definitely going to be a perfect quilt for a gender neutral city baby, from the 'Flora and Flauna' collection of Patty Young. By 'gender neutral' I'm not implying eunuch, mind. It's my passive aggressive reaction to people who don't want to know the gender of their child until the birth so their friends and family are stuck either with yellow toned gifts or returning color sex specific items.

From dianadorable

Last week I started at a new salon and have been enjoying a leisurely start to the beginning of a new stage in my life. One that I frequently wish I knew the ending so I'd stop wondering about what to do. Until then I'll plod around in my witchy flats, admittingly a bit sticky with the 90 degree weather we've been having here, a little dazed but nevertheless determined.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://diana-dor.blogspot.com/2010/05/birds-bees-and-butterflies.html' title='Birds, Bees, n' The bit of sunshine in the picture was from the last glorious week of weather we had.
Currently the dismal light is preventing me from taking pictures of the other projects I'm working on and have finished. I may be able to sneak in a peek tomorrow morning of the finished security grate as well as a skirt that I'm in the process of completing that features my new favorite color, mustard. Mamma Susie inspired the lovely hue when buying me a very expensive but lovely Easter shoe purchase from Anthropologie. There just isn't enough of that vintage jewel shade in my wardrobe.

Painting a Security Blanket

This May 1st I am celebrating the creation of the 8 hour workday (124 years ago) with a new job that I start May 17th. Today I also resigned my lease, giving me with yet another year to improve my little nest.
Mayday Mayday! Sounds like a distress call this crafty dame was ready to answer.
A late Spring clean has led to an adventure in painting. Being an urbanite includes taking off the interior security window bars to get to Windexy swipy part of the deep sparkle. One of the perks of my apartment is my charming back door, it's one decade away from derelict but for now the crackling pale blue is fantastic. Once I took the bars off I was blown away by all the light flooding into my tiny kitchen.

From dianadorable

These evil black bars are draining the life out of my tiny colorful foodspace and need to go- without sacrificing my safety. Clever urbanite.

From dianadorable

After a sponging down and trip to Ace, I applied the first coat of Spring Green. As it dries I've noticed a deepening in its shade to a more minty green, giving it a vintage effect without being distracting. Tomorrow morning I'll do the flipside then by nightfall the new and improved security blanket will be in place. If any burglars are reading this blog, I have a pair of Fiskars scissors and pointy needles on my bedside table, come and get it.

From dianadorable

From dianadorable

Piercecat spent the late afternoon watching the progress of my pinwheel quilt blocks that I intend to make into throw pillows.

From dianadorable

I've seven more to assemble, then to make these 16 inchers a thing of beauty I will be adding embroidery and button embellishment. So odd that I'd be the only person who has noticed! It does not matter that it's 3am when I get to the heel and find out I'm missing stitches. Or that my nerves are a bit off considering the oral surgery I'm undergoing in about twelve hours. Or that I have scheduled several haircuts before the surgery when I was well aware I'd be unable to drink the coffee needed to get through the morning. Obviously it's the pattern, such a silly and wrong pattern. Wait, what's that weird bulge in the lacey bit?

From dianadorable

My version of the 'Dublin Bay' socks are continuing as written after a little nip and tuck. Luckily, I only lost an inch which looks like a frightening amount of yarn when ripped from the unassuming sock. I'll be able to make up most of it on the train ride to work. They're being knit in the '07' Mariam colorway from the previous post and I've rechristened them the Culchie Socks, in deference to the Jackeens in Dublin.
It sounds ridiculous but I do remember where I was when the mistake happened. At that moment a pumpkin tinged variation happened and I was so distracted by this- coupled with the night out I was returning from on the boisterous red 'el'- that I double decreased. 'Lo and behold the two stitches that magically disappeared while I was scrambling about with the iPod and protesting to not have any change to spare on a Sunday at midnight.
Depending on how the healing process goes down, I've got both major projects on the table. Well, fuck a duck. I'm definitely not leaving the house today with these chipmunk cheeks and awesomely swollen lips. I'm staying in, eating my pudding, and finishing these socks- Vicodin or no. I will admit to feeling too loopy to pick up 200+ stitches to the cardigan for the hem/button band. Also no rotary cutting, quilt sewing, hog-tying, or kitty wrestling. Lovely dk, merino wool.

From dianadorable

Note: A bag full of wool received on a 70 degree day in March is a moment you have when you remember there is such a thing as seasonal knitting disorder. Must remember the 9 balls cost me $20 opposed to $60.

I've realized my self tanner has been rubbing off on anything light I've been touching so once again I've moved onto darker hues and machine washable projects. I'm 25, Irish and Polish and using self tanner, do not judge.

Remember that project I mentioned, the one I brought to Ireland to impress my gran? Which I then learned she never worked from patterns or used yarn under a worsted weight and sortof had distain for? Well, I'm at the halfway point (2') and the double cabling is impressively gorgeous. It's Blue Sky Alpaca's Olga Buraya-Kefelian 'Cable Cowl' by Olga Buraya-Kefelian. I fear the color might be obstructing the pattern. The cardigan is not yet listed on Ravelry but I'm sure for the $2 price tag and simple, well-written pattern will show up soon. Opposed to using their own cotton yarn I've never heard of, I'm using Tahki Cotton Classic- a proven delicious, dk cotton. I'm an accessories junkie, but also I always look for simplicity and wearability in a pattern. Which may be the reason why I have so little actual garments to show, I rather sew a larger piece then spend the time knitting it. This may explain more then I can fathom at the moment considering my absolute love and respect for knitting.

From dianadorable

In sewing news, I've been messing around with quilting. Quilting with the purpose of actually being useful. I've started a series of potholders. Hold your applause, please. Interestingly enough I've always scorned the use of red, white, and blue as a whole but through a massive Jo-Ann Fabrics sale ended up purchasing fat quarters that blend well with some cotton stash that been laying about.

From dianadorable

At Midnight it will be "Blessed Didacus of Cadiz" Day

I got back from Ireland two weeks ago where I took this photo of my Gran's knitting. She managed to crank out almost an entire cardigan in the week I was there, from the largest ball of wool I have ever seen. Well, one that isn't in a traveling sideshow or roadside attraction. For size reference, that Gaelic book is one of those oversized-type albums and she had already finished the back and one front so it was noticeably diminished. Most of the week I was at her home we drank cups of tea and knit together. So many cups of tea. My project was with a bit more courageous then my usual simple knits, on size #4 needles with a light dk with two separate cabled bits. Needless to say, I'm still working on it.

From dianadorable

This lovely set I made before I left for the chilly, Irish winter. Resting on a new spring scarf is the Amelia Earhart Aviator in Manos del Uruguay (3068) and improvised mitts in Berroco Ultra Fine. The same Oceanic colorway I mentioned from the previous entry. Also I love buttons. I love buttons that have floral designs in them even more.

From dianadorable

During the trip I was captivated by the crocuses and other flowers coming up there. Three "Quincy's" all in a row, all done in Caledon Hills Chunky Wool. I've no comments about the wool itself besides that it's soft and blocks out way, way more than I ever assumed it would. I had to take care with the shaping as it looked like it also could have doubled for an elephant slipper if I wasn't careful.

From dianadorable

This officially makes me free as a bird to do as I wish, all knit promises have been made.
Including one made for a sweetheart who needs his giant head covered this chilly winter. This is the "Buttercup Beret" by Sarai Mitnick although it looks like a different pattern altogether because of the yarn wasn't sturdy enough to hold the shape of the lace and cable pattern. I used Knit Picks Swish Worsted, which soft and cheap, wasn't the right yarn for the project.

From dianadorable
So what of the rest of February?

I'm not sure yet of what is to come except that I still haven't been able to get color out of my system. It's such a pleasure to be able to reach down in my mix bag of Tahki Cotton Classic and just pick a pattern that is the result. I lack the hardware necessary to do such a thing but I'm sure I'll be able to figure something out. Don't tell Mary, she's grown so attached the lacy bugger. It's also made me unwilling to do some actually sewing, as she does look quite fine with it wrapped around herself.

From dianadorable

Hats off to you January Part 1

It's only the middle of the month and I've made fair progress in a month of just hats- and not much else. Just so happens my brother needs a manly birthday hat. The "Groovy Cabled Toque" fit the bill for it's honeycomb-like cables and all around classiness. It's composed of Plymouth Galway, a rustic yarn with lots of warmth and with using much less then a skein.

From dianadorable

Also I needed to indulge in my love of Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend and with vivid colors in this dreary month. Post holiday I can get a little glum with all the completed projects given away, so I try to take a little time to focus on myself. No worries, this only lasts a moment before I find more chilly appendenges to warm up.
The topaz color reminded me of marigolds, so I went with a lace repeat I found in a book of stitch patterns. The green yarn is citric and warranted a revisit to "Foliage" from Knitty, a pattern I first did in September '07 with another silk blend.

From dianadorable

From dianadorable

I've also been commissioned to make (3!) Quincy hats which are slow going, interesting considering those are bulky yarned beasts.
Hats are a fantastic way to play with new patterns as well as interesting constructions. I've had a wonderful time this Christmas figuring out both the Quincy pattern as well as the Sideways Grande Cloche. Considering the amounts of hats I've made in the last several years you'd think I'd be swimming in them but as a soon as someone mentions they like it I more or less give it away without much thought. Several days ago I heard from a friend I've lost touch with and she still wears the hat I gave her on a whim two Thanksgivings ago. It leaves a warm feeling in my soul.
There's still one more color of Manos to use up and I've already started a simple 1x1 rib beanie that will be simply gorgeous once finished. It's the perfect sort of public transit knitting, mindless and simple on the hands.

My Project (bedside) Table

<span style="border-collapse: collapse;
